Unit 5 is titled "Painting with Words" as the focus was on poetry. As we reach the end of the unit, I feel that my greatest strengths have become "identifying and analyzing figurative language" and "making inferences." I still need to work on "identifying and analyzing rhythm and meter and their effects" and "identify and compare treatment."
I am now comfortable identifying and analyzing figurative language. The connection made between poetry and music really helped me develop this skill. It helped me make connections between something I was unfamiliar and uncomfortable with to something that is a huge part of my life. I began seeking out examples of figurative language in my favorite songs. The "Figurative Language Song Book" project gave me plenty of practice with these terms and concepts, and I am now comfortable with the terminology and concepts.
(here we would insert a picture of their "Figurative Language Song Book" - I don't have one handy.)
I am still struggling with identifying rhythm and meter. I know what rhythm is and with help can find the "beat" of the poems, but meter is really throwing me off. I am confused by the terminology and what they mean.
